Windows Vista Service Packs

This update to Windows Vista contains all previously released updates for this operating system. Microsoft recommends that you use Windows Update if your are only updating one computer. Using Windows Update will give you a smaller and more appropriate size update for your computer (in my case it was 121.5MB via Windows Update versus 762.5MB for standalone version). Prior to installing this service packs you must uninstall any Beta or Release Candidate versions of Vista SP1. To do this go to the Control Panel. Click View installed Updates, then click Service Pack for Microsoft Windows (KB936330, then click Uninstall.

I have read of people have serious problems with installing this service pack. I didn't have any problems at all. I did prepare for the install by making sure that I had copies of the latest drivers for my system on hand (just in case I needed them, I didn't). I also performed a full backup of my system. I used the Windows Update version for the install and it took about half an hour. After the install I did notice that my system seemed a little sluggish loading programs but that only lasted for a short time (SP1 will clear your prefetch files and it takes a short time for Vista to "relearn" your most commonly used programs). Overall I am very satisfied with Vista SP1. System performance has improved and several annoying bugs have been fixed. If you haven't done so already I highly recommended that you install Vista SP1 as soon as possible.
